Statement on AI Policy

Artificial Intelligence is having global impact across many different industries. The publishing business is no exception. Publishers, authors and agents are grappling with the implications of how AI language models and tools will potentially change the creative landscape.

When AI is used responsibly, it can be helpful and effective. But, when it seeks to replace the creative work of humans, we at Dystel, Goderich & Bourret LLC are adamantly opposed to its use.

Therefore, we would like to make our position clear: We require that our clients’ work be wholly original to them and that no generative AI is used to compose or create any part of the work that DGB represents.

In addition to the significant ethical concerns of using AI to create “original” work, publishing agreements require that an author’s work be copyrightable, and AI-generated text is not. If an author uses AI to create even a small part of their manuscript, they will be in breach of their warranties to the publisher and their contract will be subject to termination and penalties.

We want to make sure that our authors can safely claim full ownership of their work and that the magic of literary creation remains a human feat.
