It’s probably best to send the first chapter — though why would a book need both a Preface and a Prologue? A preface would be most unusual in fiction, while a prologue would be unusual in nonfiction.

I don’t see a difference between your two questions about comps, but either comparisons to other authors or other specific works are suitable as comps.

If a work has both a preface and a prologue, do those get included in the query as the ‘sample chapter’, or should one just query with both the prologue and the first chapter (skipping the preface altogether), or just the prologue?

Also, is ‘comps’ short for comparisons to other authors or works that the writer thinks his work is comparable to?
