That’s a great point, John. I think, however, the real magic in social media is the “social” part. If you have 11,000 people following you but none really communicate with you, I would suspect the 11k is kind of meaningless. I have 20k and perhaps 2k DM with me personally on Twitter. So, is my platform 20k or really 2k? If you’re James Dashner, 20k is probably the better number. If you’re a first-timer, I suspect 2k is the better number. Nevertheless, 2k is better than 0k.

This is a useful post. Unfortunately, I’ve learned this after I’ve set up a website in support of my memoir and included this information in my proposal. (Egg on face.) However, as a saving grace, I also have an author website and my other social media does not reference the upcoming memoir or its platform. (Also, the site doesn’t reference that it’s named after an upcoming memoir so it can be a standalone website.) I’ll remember this information going forward. Good info!

Now THAT was a smart post! (Eric’s, via your own, of course) The whole window of time in re you’re-not-even-signed-who-do-you-think-is-reading-this-dude is something that isn’t even brought up much. Once you have an actual book with a website address on the back and a reason to care between the covers… Then you can play with this stuff with some effect. Onwards thru the fog!
