While much of it is wartime and has its sad moments, he often sparks joy. The more joyful ones are: TRUSTEE FROM THE TOOLROOM, RUINED CITY, A TOWN LIKE ALICE, NOW HIGHWAY, THE FAR COUNTRY, AND PASTORAL (the last will make you cry, but is also joyful in its own way). For sheer joy, I love the Betsy-Tacy books. And The Borrowers.
