I’ve always figured that the value in a picture book was to show a child something that he isn’t likely to see in real life any time soon. The Sahara, for example, or a herd of American bison in full stampede. Even as a child, and certainly as an adult, I never had an interest in things that looked like my neighborhood and my life.
