Some picture books I’ve read more recently that were really great are:

Sky Color, by Peter H. Reynolds
The Dot, also by Peter H. Reynolds
Someday, by Alison McGhee (more geared towards new moms, I think, but I teared up a little because I’m a big sentimental dork)
Interrupting Chicken, by Dsvid Ezra Stein

Also, Glamourpuss, by Sarah Weeks and illustrated by David Small, is worth a look even if you don’t even up buying it just for the ridiculous illustrations of this neurotic chihuahua. Sometimes at my internship I hit the shelf and flip to that spread when I need a quick chuckle :)

My 10 year old daughter asked me to read it to her the other day and my 13 year old son was drawn like a moth to a light as soon as he heard the first line. He said, “Oh, I always loved that one!” and joined us on the couch for the rest of the story. I love the power that favorite children’s books have to draw us back to our younger selves. Some other good ones that I give to my little friends:

Black Dog, by Levi Pinfold
Lester’s Dreadful Sweaters, by K.G. Campbell
A Hen for Izzy Pippik, by Aubrey Davis

Oh, and so many more it makes my brain hurt..

Because I’m from Maine I have to add:

Blueberries for Sal, by Robert McCloskey
Miss Rumphius, by Barbara Cooney

I could do this all day!

So fun to have little ones to buy books for!!
