From the time we were very young, he told us two things. “You should never mark your body in any identifiable and permanent way in case you ever have to hide your identity. You might not think that could ever happen, but it happened to the Jews during the Holocaust.” And “Your grandfather got tattoos in the Army and now he’s a school principal. He has to wear long sleeves for the rest of his life, even when it’s really hot.”

I’m not sure which one scared us more! I do think the bit about marking yourself is an interesting idea that I might use in a book someday. I’m not sure how, but that’s the beauty of fiction…it just occurs to you one day.

If I were to get one of a wordy bent, I think it would be my mantra: All shall be well.
