In my latest work, for example, I omit the comma between the city name and the name of the state. The novel is set in the future, so the suggestion is this is how everyone writes in the future. I am writing in the convention of the (future) day.

While this may or may not work from an agent or an editor’s perspective, from a writer’s perspective, if its done consciously, it is at least worth consideration.
