I've already started on my summer reading with Ship Breaker by Paolo Bacigalupi (on audiobook) and Holly Black's White Cat. After that, I'm onto The Maze Runner, Heavenly by Jennifer Laurens, and Life by Keith Richards just because I can't resist. I saw it at Costco and I was immediately drawn to it. EW's list kind of leaves me cold, but I have to admit that I enjoyed The Particular Sadness of Lemon Cake. I thought it was an interesting blend of science fiction and literary fiction. Clearly, not everything that happens in the story is real, but I think Aimee Bender captured the real pain and anxiety a family experiences when it's falling apart and nobody wants to acknowledge what's happening. Also, contrary to what that guy posted on The Huffington Post about overrated authors, I know Aimee Bender can't be that easy to imitate. If that were the case, we'd see more good books out there. If anyone's bored and looking for summer reading inspiration, I have an ever-growing list on Goodreads.

SO many books on my list this summer! I already read (and loved) The Summer I Read Gatsby by Danielle Ganek and Outlaw by Angus Donald, two very different– but perfect for me!– summer reads. Looking forward to The Junior Officers’ Reading Club by Patrick Hennessey, The Company Man by Robert Jackson Bennett, plus loads of teen galleys like Harlan Coben’s Shelter and Heather Davis’ Wherever You Go. Also might have to treat myself to a reread of Shadow of the Wind by Carlos Ruis Zafon because we’re going to Barcelona.

I loved Before I Fall and The Glass Castle,and we’re going to read the Lemon Cake book for our book club in a few months–it sounds like a fun read. I just finished Room by Emma Donoghue and thought it was amazing. In YA, I’m reading A Touch Mortal and also loved If I Stay by Gayle Forman.

This is a rare occasion where I have actually read some of the books that someone plans to read. I enjoyed both Lemon Cake and Glass Castle, in different ways. Before I fall is one that I am planning to read sometime this year as well. Look forward to hearing what you have to say about these books.

Mostly sequels for me this summer. It seems a lot of excellent books are getting sequels between March and July this year! I’m currently reading THE WISE MAN’S FEAR (the sequel to THE NAME OF THE WIND) and plan to read DEADLINE (the sequel to FEED), HEARTLESS (the latest Parasol Protectorate book), and A DANCE WITH DRAGONS (the latest A Song of Ice and Fire aka Game of Thrones book) for sure. After that, I’ll probably continue Kevin J. Anderson’s Terra Incognita series or pick one of the approximately eight million unread books on my shelves to read, depending on my mood.

I think I just had the most perfect weekend for reading on the beach (blogged above). Is it terrible I’ve heard the jingle “back to life…back to reality” in my head all day? Did I just date myself as a child of the 80s?
