I’m bummed about Borders for a ton of reasons: their selection, the coupons, the convenience. But more than all that, Borders didn’t show up in the greater Chicago area until my late teens/early 20s, and it was a treat to go to a bookstore with a cafe & sit and drink coffee and read. Yes, bookstore-cafes are ubiquitous now, but I have such fond memories of my early-days trips to Borders.

It’s my #1 e-reading device and I buy everything at Borders. All indications say Kobo won’t be affected because of epub. I’m hoping this is correct.

In general, about what this means for diminishing competition and variety, and personally, about the fact that the Borders nearest me is closing. My crit group meets there every Thursday, and I buy books there most weeks. Shouldn’t that be enough to finance that store? Argh.

I don’t like to think about what this will mean for midlist authors and new authors as the big six publishers are owed millions that they will probably never see.
