I must say – I picked up a book once from who knows where. The story and writing weren't fantastic, but it was an enjoyable read, so I glanced at the author. Turns out Pamela Anderson had written it. Needless to say I was surprised.

I see no reason why a celebrity wouldn't be able to pen a book if they put the same amount of time into learning the craft as any other published writer. Jodie Foster, Natalie Portman, and many others are very educated, and I could see one of them working to develop their talent. But that's something I doubt Snooki has done. I'm sure there's a ghostwriter involved. Even so, I expect the first line to be about beaches and/or tans or alcohol.

I agree with Writergirl. I'd pick up a book written by someone like Jodi Foster, but it's just irritating to think that there have been so many hard working people slaving away for God only knows how long, sending out letters to agents, writing, rewriting, editing and revising and working to be better at their craft yet are still unpublished, and celebrities like Snookie can act like she does, drop their names and get published.

Isn't this an example of everything that is wrong with publishing? They are throwing millions of dollars at some airheaded bimbo to put her name on a ghost-written novel hoping that the celebrity of her name alone will sell the book.

If they put half of that money into marketing a GOOD book from a new author they would probably end up with a smash success and jumpstart a career.

Instead this ghost-written schlock will get poor reviews, have middle of the ground (or outright poor) sales and they will walk away scratching their head wondering what they did wrong... until the opportunity comes along to do it again at which time they will do it again.

I don't think there's any reason why an actress or singer couldn't be a talented writer but it's never someone like Jodi Foster (who apparently has a degree in literature from Yale) it's always the most airheaded ones like Lauren Conrad who end up publishing.
