Editors and scouts are likely candidates to become agents–Jessica's route to DGLM. Some may transfer over from similar jobs in other parts of the media; Stacey started out in film. Others start out as interns and assistants at an agency and work their way up–like myself, Michael, Lauren, and Chasya (I told you–none of us leave!). Publishing's a tiny business, and it's tough to break into, so the most direct route is usually to start at the bottom of the totem pole and learn it from the ground up.

And Jenn, happily the reason I never quit for good was that they kept taking me back!
