Sometimes there is such a thing as bad publicity. Viswanathan’s experience is living proof. Well, that and the recent Judith Regan/O.J. Simpson fiasco proves that adage is false.

The challenge I’ve had with calling it women’s fiction instead of chick lit is then there are these literary expectations. And so the agent/editor is disappointed when he/she reads it and it sounds an awful lot like chick lit. :)

Yup. It’s tempting to want to hop on the bandwagon when you see the hottest new whatever-lit author making the talk show rounds. The thing is, trying to write a book that will fit into today’s trend is like being a day late to the prom. I work well with the idea of writing the kind of books I would love to read.

Alas, I knew her well.

This re-categorizing is sort of true for all genres, isn’t it? Spin and market can make any book into any genre–particularly for well-established authors who have the audacity to stray into new areas. I’m always surprised at the number of horror and paranormals that are being passed off as mainstream. I’ll be interested to see how chick lit’s re-assimilation goes.
